Philippine government bans deployment of Filipino workers to Kuwait

Effective immediately, the Philippine government has announced a total ban on new employment to Kuwait. This includes Filipino workers who have already obtained employment permits but not yet traveled to Kuwait.Manila Philippines during day with city skyline
The decision was brought about following reports of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) suffering abuse and exploitation. There has been a series of incidents that have led to the deaths and injuries of a number of OFWs in the Gulf state.
The new regulation covers all OFWs, including those who have just been hired, are currently looking for work in Kuwait or suffering in poor working conditions.

Key considerations

It is unclear at this stage if the authorities will seek to revoke the permits of Filipinos currently working in Kuwait or of previous hires returning on new contracts. There is also no indication as to if, or when, the ban will be lifted.
