United Arab Emirates and Switzerland sign short-stay visa waiver agreement

Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates have signed an agreement on the short-stay visa waiver for holders of ordinary passports.

Since May 6, 2016 there has been an agreement between the European Union (EU) and the UAE on the short-stay visa waiver. This agreement allows UAE nationals to stay in the Schengen Area, including Switzerland, without having to apply for a visa upfront, for 90 days in a period of 180 days. It also exempts EU citizens from having to apply for a visa for UAE. Zurich

Since Switzerland is not a member of the EU, Swiss nationals officially could not use this agreement when travelling to the UAE. However, the UAE has now, on a unilateral basis, granted similar rights to Swiss nationals travelling to the UAE.

In line with the EU/ UAE agreement, the two governments have now agreed on a bilateral agreement.

Key Considerations
